Brian:

HIE is very grainy film period. No way around it. A developer that has a
grain solvent effect like Microdol-X might reduce this effect but in years
of monitoring this list I have never heard of anyone liking the results with
it. Kodak does not recommend this film-developer combo.
I like D-76 straight for 8 min at 75 degrees or 11 min at 68 degrees.
These are Kodak's suggested times. Less agitation, 2-3 gentle inversions
every 30 sec rather than the vigorous agitation Kodak recommends, will give
less contrast.
The big variable is the amount of IR light, which you cannot reasonably
measure, at the time of exposure. Look at it as an experiment, a crapshoot
or an adventure depending on your state of mind. Shoot some film!
