California Coast

I hope this is not too far off subject.  If so, please accept my apologies 
and perhaps someone can respond to me directly.

I am looking for a place to exercise my little Noblex this spring.  I am 
considering the northern California coast but I am unfamiliar with anything 
farther north than the Golden Gate.

I have driven the coast between San Francisco and Santa Barbara.  Is the 
coast north of San Francisco as spectacular as it is to the South?  
Would it be worthwhile to drive as far north as Eureka or Crescent City?  
Are there any recommendations for side trips off of the coast?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for sightseeing and photographing 
(except those about where to put this kind of question).
