Color saturation and contrast (was Re: New Fuji Film: Astia)

Re: reasons for trend of increasing film contrast, Gary Nored
suggests I'm passing off unreal information? My comment was
based on two things: reported studies that consumers consistently
indicate a preference for photos with "eye-popping" color (when
asked to choose between side-by-side photos); and a comment in
"The 35mm Film Source Book" noting that increasing a film's
color saturation almost always causes an increase in contrast.

Speaking of too much contrast, I recently heard of two options for
reducing it: 1) double exposing a slide, filling the frame with a
grey card for one of the exposures (simulates "flashing" the film);
2) a "contrast-reduction" filter that won an Academy of Motion Pictures
(?) Technical Achievement Award. Anyone try either of these on their
stereo photos?
