P3D Slide Scanners

I too have been looking into slide scanners.  One possibility is the HP
PhotoSmart Photo Scanner which has 2400 dpi for negatives or slides and
300 dpi for prints up to 5x7 inch.  Ritz camera lists scanner at $399
and HP has promotion on with $100 rebate making total cost $299.  I have
seen some negative comments about scanner when compaired to ones costing
about twice as much but don't know if HP has improved product since
then.
