I too recently jumped on the digital camera bandwagon, but not primarily
for routine photography, but rather as a way to get images into the
computer instantly that would normally require film, developing and
scanning. My megapixel camera still doesn't have sufficient resolution,
and there are noticeable compression artifacts in the images if you
enlarge them (it uses JPEG as the image format, and while the amount of
compression is selectable, it cannot be entirely disabled).

It, too is a battery hog. So here's a tip. Radio Shack now sells
nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries (in addition to the
standard nickel-cadmium, NiCd). They aren't cheap, and you will need a
special charger for them. A pair will run you around $9. However, they
are rated at 1200 mAh, which is more than high-output alkalines which
might reach 1000-1100 mAh, and so will both last longer than alkalines,
and of course being rechargeable will eventually save you money. I
invested in two sets so I could always have replacements handy. For an
investment of about $70, including a charger that will handle four of
them at a time as well as charge ordinary NiCds, you will never have to
buy batteries for that digital camera again.
