I don't think it was the sound people who did it to us.
It was you.  YOU Americans.  With your tendency to
abbreviate everything.  The correct terms are "stereoscopic"
and "stereophonic".  But when you decide to call everything
"stereo" then we have a problem.  Simple "math"....  (when
I first heard - here in the USA - that "math" is used to mean
"mathematics", I almost fainted!)  Since stereophonic is far 
more popular than stereoscopic, then the game is over...

Greeks and I believe French and other European countries
still call it stereoscopic.
